Communities Secretary: Will soon be easier to green-proof buildings

It could soon be easier to make buildings more environmentally-friendly if the government has its way.

Communities Secretary Eric Pickles has announced that ministers are looking into making green regulations simpler which could be welcome news to developers and those in planning jobs.

He noted that just having positive intentions regarding the system is not enough.

“We”ve acted quickly to ensure the environment can be protected, without overwhelming everyone with red tape,” Mr Pickles added.

Councils and businesses could be the ones to benefit from any amendments made to the legislation, which could end up saving more than £200 million a year as repetition of work during the planning process is likely to be avoided.

This news comes after Richard Capie, director of policy and practice at the Chartered Institute of Housing, welcomed welfare reform plans, which might be positive news for those on the lookout for jobs in housing.

Housing minister: We will not tell communities where to build

The housing minister has announced that the government will not inform communities how or where they should build properties.

Grant Shapps noted that there has been no time lost in ensuring that local regions and people have a much quicker development system to work with, which could help those in planning jobs.

He added: “With house building falling to its lowest level since 1924, action is needed now to build the homes the country needs. That’’s why these new powerful incentives to build will be introduced early in the Spending Review period.”

These comments come after he announced yesterday (August 9th) that a New Homes Bonus will be introduced into the Spending Review era.

And he declared that this scheme will ensure communities that attempt growth will reap the rewards.

This comes after the National Housing Federation announced last month that more affordable homes are needed to ensure neighbourhood life is not wiped out.

Fed: Critical that UK keeps building affordable houses

It is critical that the nation keeps building affordable houses, according to one organisation.

David Orr, chief executive of the National Housing Federation, said the construction of reasonably priced homes needs to be safeguarded.

He added: “It is clear the amount of public money available to fund various activities in the future is going to be tight.”

But Mr Orr also urged the government to invest in the sector as the social, human and economic cost from not doing so could be “huge”, which might have an affect on those in housing jobs.

Housing associations are constantly considering ways in which properties could be built more effectively and innovatively in order to make the best possible use of public money.

This news comes after it was announced earlier this week that work has begun on a £2 million affordable homes development after land was provided by South Hams District Council.

Work to begin on £2m affordable housing development

Work is set to begin on a £2 million affordable property development.

South Hams District Council has provided land to allow Hastoe Housing Association to construct the 17 homes on a former allotment site next to Charnwood in Marlborough near Kingsbridge.

The Homes and Communities Agency has pledged £1.2 million of the money, while the housing association has put in additional funding.

Councilor Michael Saltern, executive portfolio holder for housing, said when he attended the original consultation meeting the community was “very receptive” towards the plans.

He added: “Marlborough has a very clear and crucial need for affordable housing and this development emphasises our commitment to providing affordable homes for local people.”

This news comes after the National Housing Federation – which represents England’’s housing associations – declared earlier this month that around 100,000 affordable properties are needed in the next ten years to protect community life and ensure it is not wiped out.
