NHF welcomes social housing increase

Moves by the government to increase the number of social homes built in Britain have been welcomed, it has been revealed.

Following proposals that £2.1 billion will be ploughed into the programme, the National Housing Federation (NHF) states those with housing association jobs should particularly benefit, as they are currently the only organisations delivering the required amount of affordable properties.

Indeed, the federation highlights that not only do housing associations already have land on which to build, they also have development staff "on tap" and the necessary funding to increase the number of affordable homes built.

Unveiled by Gordon Brown earlier this week, the plan will see councils and housing associations receive additional funds with which to built more than 15,000 affordable homes over the next two years.

Ruth Davison, director of the NHF, also applauded moves to change the way in which affordable housing is allocated.

"The government has at last recognised that the current allocations policy is unfair and we look forward to working with ministers to create a system that is fair and flexible," she states.
