Arcon calls for affordable energy

A major housing association is calling on MPs to back a campaign which aims to create more affordable energy for its tenants.

Rochdale-based Arcon Housing Association has asked local MP Paul Rowen to back a scheme which will create a ”fairer deal” for those customers with pre-payment electricity meters.

A total of five million people across the UK still pay for electricity through meters and Arcon claims that they are often ignored by energy companies when they promote new tariffs, bundles and deals.

Peter Schilizzi from Arcon said: "People who use pre-payment meters often have to pay more than other consumers for their electricity and this is simply not fair."

He added that the group takes the welfare of residents very seriously and is committed to getting them a fairer deal on energy.

In Manchester, Parkway Green and Willow Park housing trusts are calling on their local MP Paul Goggins to raise the issue with energy minister Malcolm Wicks.
