Affordable homes ‘’should be government focus”

More emphasis should be placed on affordable housing, it has been suggested.

In a recently-released report it was revealed that both councils and housing developers believe that government growth targets should focus on the provision of affordable properties.

Social and economic sustainability are also suggested as areas that the government should concentrate on, in news that might interest those with housing jobs.

However, at present central government was said to be focusing on increasing the overall number of properties available, Inside Housing reports.

The study comes following a consultation on how government housing cash can work with local area agreements and growth areas.

When monitoring programmes of development, the report stated that "there was a general concern that the assessment needed to take more account of sustainability rather than focusing so keenly on housing numbers, as well as taking into account current market conditions".

In other news, housing minister Caroline Flint recently unveiled a £510 million fund to help councils free up land on which to construct houses.
