Planning recommendations put forward for rural areas

A new report has called for changes to be made for policy regarding planning and the construction of affordable homes in rural areas, it has been revealed.

The report by Truro and St Austell MP Matthew Taylor claimed that the increasing cost of properties, combined with low wages in such areas, is making affording a home to be evermore difficult.

Andrew Wiles, field director in the south-west for the Housing Corporation, welcomed the review.

He said: "As Matthew Taylor acknowledges, the corporation will increase the number of homes we fund in rural areas through its 2008-11 investment programme."

Mr Wiles went on to report it is important for housing associations and local councils to "maximise their efforts to take advantage of the funding opportunity now available".

Commissioned by the prime minister, Mr Taylor was asked to investigate how planning and land use can deliver affordable homes more effectively.

Such news could interest those looking for jobs in housing.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that the Housing Corporation had exceeded many of the construction targets it was set in 2007-08.
