Smaller housing associations ’should focus on governance’

It is important for those with housing jobs at smaller housing associations to take steps to strengthen governance, it has been reported.

Findings released by the Housing Corporation indicated that such organisations should look to make sure they have an experienced board.

Meanwhile, it was reported that partnerships working and providing access to guidance and support are areas which housing associations should also keep in mind.

The study also showed that housing associations believe they need help with training, measuring their performance and following various regulatory requirements.

Steve Douglas, chief executive of the Housing Corporation, claims that, within the emerging environment for housing, "action is needed with smaller associations in each of the recommended areas to ensure these organisations continue to be effective in meeting the diverse needs of the communities they currently serve".

It was also revealed that those associations which have a portfolio of less than 1,000 properties make up more than three-quarters of all social housing providers.

Meanwhile, Housing 21 recently claimed that those associations which focus on their tenants might find opportunities to expand their services following the government’s recent agenda on housing for older people.
