Housing associations ‘have opportunities’ with older people’s housing plans

The government’s recent agenda on housing for older people presents opportunities for housing associations.

Such is the assertion of Housing 21, which stated that those providers which are adaptable and focus on tenants should be able to manage with the challenges posed by personal budget plans.

In a report, the ways in which housing associations can help provide personalised support packages to older people and the need for flexible management structures were discussed.

Sarah Vallelly, research manager at Housing 21, claimed that the organisation had been looking to start a debate concerning the impact "that personal budgets will have on older people’s housing".

She said: "Person-centred services will become a reality and we believe that the personalisation agenda can create new opportunities for extra care and sheltered housing."

Meanwhile, Housing Corporation policy manager James Berrington claimed that the lessons learned from these plans in managing accommodation for older people will be of assistance for all areas of specialist housing.

It was recently revealed that Housing 21 had been selected by Axiom Housing Association to provide 25,000 hours of care services at The Pavilions residential development in Peterborough.
