HCA claims housing associations should do more in building homes

Those working for housing associations and councils should play a larger role in the provision of house building, it has been claimed.

According to Sir Bob Kerslake, chief executive of the newly-created Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), the financial uncertainness caused by the credit crunch means that a wider range of organisations should be looking to construct homes.

In particular, it was indicated that registered social landlords, especially those working for large organisations, should be proactive when its comes to planning for the building of properties.

He told Inside Housing: "I’m saying that if local authorities can find ways of moving forward house building then why the hell not."

The HCA chief executive went on to assert that those with housing association jobs could take a long-term view about the specific needs of the communities they operate in than other developers.

In other news, it was recently revealed an affordable housing scheme managed by Ribble Valley council and the Great Places Housing Group had been launched in Clitheroe, Lancashire.
