More council homes to be built in Scotland
A multimillion pound investment package into Scottish council housing has been made, it has been revealed.
Speaking at the Scottish National Party conference this weekend, Nicola Sturgeon, deputy first minister for Scotland, announced that some £25 million would be made available to help further with the construction of council-owned properties.
Ms Sturgeon said: "I can report to you today that since May last year, councils have started work on 250 new council homes. But we must go further."
The minister claimed that in four previous years of Labour rule only six council homes were built in Scotland.
Jacqui Watt, chief executive of the Scottish Federation of Housing Associations, also pointed out that housing associations "have the construction, development and project management skills needed to build new houses" and that local authorities should work together with such organisations in delivering this.
Earlier this month, it was revealed that the Housing Corporation is to issue Rotherham council with a £7.8 million grant to build 209 new homes, the South Yorkshire Times reports.
